Description

EUROCROPMAP is a set of highly detailed land use and land cover (LULC) maps for the countries of the European Union, created by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (JRC). The first version of the map was released for 2018, and in 2024, an update for 2022 was presented, covering 27 EU countries, as well as Ukraine. It includes 19 types of crops and 7 general classes of cover. Methodology: based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data, as well as auxiliary data on surface temperature and terrain. Trained at 134 thousand LUCAS field survey data sites (Land Use and Coverage Area Frame Survey). A two-level Random Forest classifier was used (first, 7 classes of land use, then detailing arable land to 19 types of crops). Accuracy: overall accuracy is 79.3% for 7 grades, 70.6% for 19 crops. Validation was carried out using LUCAS independent points, farmers’ declarations (GSA) and Eurostat statistics; for a number of crops (rapeseed, sugar beet, corn), Producer’s accuracy exceeds 90%. Access: free in the JRC, WMS and Google Earth Engine catalog. It is used for agricultural monitoring, policy assessment, and yield forecasting.
